Merseyside Derby: Stat Attack

All the relevant facts & Figures ahead of this Saturday's 204th Merseyside derby.



Overall league record: Liverpool 65 wins, Everton 55 wins, Draws 54. At Everton: Liverpool 28 wins, Everton 32 wins, Draws 27. Last season Liverpool completed a league 'double' over their city rivals, winning both games 3-1. In the first meeting, here at Goodison over Christmas, the Reds won thanks to goals from Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse. Everton finished the game with nine men after Phil Neville and Mikel Arteta were dismissed. Everton's goal, by James Beattie, was the first conceded by Liverpool for 762 minutes. In the return Liverpool won 3-1 at Anfield. Steven Gerrard was sent off before Phil Neville (o.g.), Luis Garcia and Harry Kewell found the net. Tim Cahill scored for the Blues who had Andy Van Der Meyde red carded.

Liverpool have won 79 of the 203 meetings with Everton winning 63 and 61 ending in stalemate. In League meetings today will see the 175th clash. The Reds lead those wins by 65-55. Liverpool have lost just one of the last eight Derbies at Goodison winning five of the last six. The Blue half of Merseyside have celebrated a derby win in just one of the last 13 meetings home and away. That came in December 2004 when Lee Carsley scored the only goal. The last player to score a hat-trick in a 'Derby' was Ian Rush. He scored four on this ground in a 5-0 win in November 1982. Dixie Dean is the last Everton player to achieve the feat scoring all his sides goals in a 3-1 win in September 1931. Ian Rush in that above game became the first and so far only Liverpool player to score a league hat-trick at Goodison.

John Arne Riise scored his first league goal for Liverpool on this ground in September 2001. Robbie Fowler's last appearance in a derby came on this ground in April 2001. He missed a penalty in the Reds 3-2 win. He has scored six goals for Liverpool in 15 games against Everton. Momo Sissoko could make his 50th appearance for Liverpool if he recovers from injury. Jerzy Dudek made his Liverpool debut five years ago today-against Aston Villa. Dirk Kuyt scored in both Rotterdam 'derbies' last season against Sparta. Liverpool could have possibly six 'Derby' debutants in the game- Daniel Agger, Mark Gonzalez, Fabio Aurelio, Jermaine Pennant, Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt.

Both sides biggest league win on this ground has been by a 5-0 scoreline. Everton recorded theirs in April 1909 and Liverpool in November 1982. The Reds are unbeaten in their last 17 games in all competitions including 11 in the league. Liverpool's win against West Ham two weeks ago was the 12th time under Rafa Benitez the Reds had come from behind to win. Liverpool have not lost after scoring the first goal of a game since the League Cup Final in 2005. That is the only time it has happened in the 71 games the Reds have scored first under Rafa Benitez. Only three current Everton players have scored in a Merseyside Derby - Tim Cahill has two, Lee Carsley and James Beattie one each. The last Everton player to score twice at Goodison in a League Derby is Alan Ball who did so in August 1966. Everton have come from behind to win a Derby only once since the war-that came in 1992 when Peter Beardsley scored the winner. The Blues haven't scored more than twice in a league Derby since a 3-1 win at Goodison in August 1966. Some 79 Derbies have been played since. Everton's win here two seasons ago was their first and only one this century. David Moyes has won only one Derby as Everton boss in nine games. Andy Johnson scored the only goal on his last appearance against Liverpool-for Crystal Palace in April 2005. Phil Neville's two derby appearances last season saw him sent-off at Goodison and score an own goal at Anfield. The Blues could go top of the Premiership if they win while a Liverpool victory will take them within two points of Manchester United. Everton have lost just four of their last 22 League games. They have lost only once at home in the Premiership since Liverpool won at Goodison in December. That defeat came against Tottenham in April. 19 players have been dismissed in Merseyside Derbies down the years - seven from Liverpool and 12 from Everton. Eight of those have come on this ground. Four were dismissed last season in the two games and seven have seen red in the last seven meetings. Everton have been awarded just seven penalties in post-war league derbies with five being scored and two missed.
